Big Mama’s house is where everyone met up for Sunday dinner. Watching Big Mama, who is my mom, but our kids called her Big Mama. She prepared those Sunday dinners with so much love which was a cherished experience. You could hardly wait until she finished. Nobody was a stranger to Big Mama. If you were there, you would eat.
I remember growing up, sitting there and watching because I wanted to learn how to cook just like her. Making cornbread really excited me. I loved to sit and watch her make her cornbread—that’s how I learned, by watching Big Mama.
I remember one event, it was Christmas time, and I was eating
dinner with some friends. I had to cook the collard greens. My niece came by and got a plate. When she bit into those collards, she stopped and said, “These taste like Big Mama’s collards,” and I just laughed.
When you look around, there aren’t too many Big Mamas anymore, so I want to bring back that environment, and that’s
the foundation of Big Mama’s Restaurant and Catering.
Elester’s Kitchen was a place of peace, love, solitude, and connection. A place where people could come, get a great meal, and leave with love. You didn’t have to have the same last name to be considered family.
To recreate the warmth and love of Big Mama’s house, where everyone feels welcome and enjoys delicious, home-cooked meals prepared with love and tradition.
In Elester's Kitchen, no one was judged, just loved. A place with great food, great seasoning, and a great spirit. Elester's Kitchen was where I and many others called home.
